Plein Air Painting with new gloves

Oh, yes, even the cold, crisp days are great days to Plein Air Paint.  As you see, layers are important. So, bundle up and take advantage of these sunny mornings.
I am really happy with the new glove I found.  They are actually Isotoner gardening gloves with long tops.
My hands stay nice and warm.  The gloves fit very well and are water resistant.  I found them at Tuesday Morning.

"Survivor" Dogwood Canyon

As the tram transported loads of eager artists into the canyon, my head was filled with many inviting sights.  I was so consumed with all of the beauty of nature that surrounded me.  It was difficult to focus on what I wanted to paint.  Just too many inspirations.
By mid afternoon, I was very disappointed with myself and had wiped down two panels.  Never, wiped down a painting before.  I had expected a very productive day and the sun was marching off to the west.  Only an hour or so before the park would be closing.  I started the stone bridge painting for a second time.  I was fighting the dull wash that remained on the panel and a bad painting day for me.
The trams were beginning to gather the artists and visitors.  Reluctantly, I cleaned up and stowed my wet canvas away.
As I rode the shuttle back to Big Cedar, something fell from the overhead bin.  Oh no, it was my bridge painting.  Should I claim it??  Alas, it had survived.  It spent the remainder of the trip in my wet canvas carrier.

                   "Survivor" - Unrevised

Upon arriving home, it joined the "to do" pile on unfinished paintings.  Almost 3 weeks had passed, "Survivor" started speaking to me.  I even awaken early one morning visualizing bringing new life to "Survivor" and sharing this story with others.

I really enjoyed the transformation of  "Survivor".

Thanks for letting me share my "pain" with you.  And, I hope you can appreciate what artists go through in creating works of art.  Sometimes, a painting almost falls from the brush.  Other times, they survive the "to do" pile to have a new life.

Your comments are welcome.  Think I should keep the name?  Or, maybe, you would like to suggest one.

Creatively yours,
Teddy

"Simply Summer" 3rd Place Winner Dockside Quick Paint

On the final day of the Door County Plein Air Festival 2011, the Dockside Quick Paint Competition was held near the Clark Park in Fish Creek, WI.  Some 140 artists were scrambling to set up their easels at their chosen locations within a 4 to 5 block radius of the park.  The bull horn sounded at 9:00am.  The artists began painting. Two hours later, the horn sounded again.  It was a perfect morning to paint.  There were so many people walking around watching the artists and enjoying the fantastic Door County weather with temperatures in the mid 70s for this event.

Fun to paint the ripples in the park near Bailey's Harbor, the closest town of our cottage at Sunset Shores Resort on Kangaroo Lake.

Below: "Delightful Retreat" is a view of Cliff House, one of cottages behind the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek, WI
Some many beautiful locations to paint.  This was painted in Bailey's Harbor, just down the street from the library.  The only WiFi in town was at the library, so it was a popular place to gather.

We will be spending several hours each day watching the 40 invited artists as they paint.

Joshua Been Workshop

Joshua Been taught a Plein Air workshop immediately following the Augusta Show and Sales.
Day 1
We started off with some of the basics.
He demonstrated painting a building in Augusta and then we all painted the same location.  It is always interesting to see how differently each artist sees things.
Here is Josh's block in with the building in the background of this photo.
Note how far back he is holding the brush.

  Day 2
We painted at the Kessler Farm.  The subjects varied from the building and solos to the winding creek.  He had used a sheet marked with a grid to illustrate perspective, which is apparent in this drawing.
You will see this painting again in the photo for Day 3.

 Day 3
We were off to the river bottoms near Washington, MO.  The morning was terrific.  We actually had some sun.

Kathy Lentz invited the class to her home nearby.   Josh demonstrated converting the plein air piece from Day 2 into a studio painting.
What a fantastic end to a great workshop.

Josh has been invited to the Door County Plein Air Event the third week in July.  Be sure to visit his website.

Augusta Plein Air Event 2011

During our day at Defiance I painted my favorite painting of this event.  "Bike Stop" was painted from the covered back porch of the Katy Trail Bike Shop.  This bike was located across the yard near Robin's Nest Gift Shop.
It was a rainy year for the 9th Annual Augusta Plein Event.  So, this was one of those days that the artists were seeking shelter.  The porch was a perfect spot for my chosen subject.

Hope you like just one as much as I do.

Second Place Award in Acrylic

"Abandoned" depicts an old roadway that is overlooked by most.  It is a location that I have painted before and I enjoy checking out each year.  I know that one day the road will be dozed away to become a home site or a new road.  Meanwhile, I like to record the feeling of the road and think about its journey through the years.

Your comments are greatly appreciated.

Another rainy morning, but, just look what I saw from the kitchen window.  It was still early, so I decided to paint these iris on the hillside before heading out for another damp day of painting.

Other Augusta paintings may be viewed in the New Artwork Collection.

Billyo Workshop - April 20, 2011

The 9th Annual Augusta, MO Plein Air Annual started with a great workshop presented by Bill O'Donnell, better known as Billyo.  He painted a plein air painting representing each county in Missouri.  I believe it took him seven years to complete.  He complied all of these images into a wonderful book titled "Painting Missouri.  He has a gallery in the Chesterfield Mall in St. Louis.

It was a cold crisp morning near the Katy Trail head in Augusta, MO.  I was so glad I wore my Winter Silks.  Just wishing I had gloves and another layer or two of clothes.

I really liked the painting in this photo.

Inspite of the cold, I was totally intrigued by what Billyo was sharing with us.  He had made his own palette, which attached to his Soltek easel with zelcro.  Lots of mixing space with a grey scale background color.  We were all introduced to a wonderful brush - extra long filbert - Utrecht 103.   I have two - sizes 2 & 6.  Wow, they are fun.  I can't put them down.

He suggests finding the dominate hue in scene.  Squint down to determine the vales and then simplify.  Next, lay in the masses that you are seeing.

Billyo says, "Look for what excites and inspires you.  Always ask why and Challenge yourself"

It was a great day.  We had a nice indoor lunch break and Billyo critiqued two paintings from each of the participants.

Plein Air Painting Event - Big Cedar Lodge 2010

The first annual Big Cedar Plein Air Painting Event was a terrific success.
Here I am during the One Hour Quick Paint held on Oct. 21, 2010.
My painting titled "Scarlet Beauty" was the first painting to sell from my exhibit.
If you look down the road in this photo you will see the area that I used for my inspiration in painting this scene.
Thanks to all the wonderful people who came out to watch us paint and those who came to the Reception.  This was certainly a very successful event and many have added it to their calendar for next year.
Hope to see you at Big Cedar Lodge on Oct. 20, 21, 22, 2011.

Hidden Glen Plein Air Event 2010

This hearty group of artists was invited to participate in the Plein Air Paint Out.  There were so many neat locations to paint.  The Plein Air Tent was filled with beautiful works of art.

I am the one in the green shirt on the front row.

Special thanks to Carol and Bill McCall for coordinating the event for us.  Bill is in the red shirt on the far left and Carol is on the far right wearing a red shirt.

Looking forward to this event again next year.

My first painting is titled "Reaching Out".
It was a pleasant cool morning on
the first day of the event.  I found this
great view deep in one of the wooded areas.

"Refreshing" is another one of my paintings
from the event.  I focused on only one of the
three waterfalls, which spilled into the lake.
This is the uppermost portion of the falls.
The shade from the trees created a cool and
                          refreshing look.
